It was built essentially from materials found in the Madikwe Reserve by an ecologically sensitive team of individuals, and the moment you pass through the ancient Zanzibar Elephant Doors you have entered the world of Mateya, which is nestled high in the rocky outcrop of the Gabbro hills. The lodge, which consists of a dining, lounge and relaxation areas, provides an uninterrupted view of the reserve.

The reception, beautifully decorated with original artworks, leads out onto a deck with a view of the reserve and surrounding escarpment. In celebration of a rich history of diversity and the untamed beauty to which the lodge is home, Mateya has acquired one of the world's finest collections of art from throughout the continent. It is home to 21 original paintings by Paul Augustinus, Robert Glen's bronze sculpture of a lioness attempting to bring down a leaping impala ('Near Miss') as well as several bronze sculptures by Dylan Lewis.
