Situated about 25km from the Botswanan border, Mafikeng is a small town with an interesting siege in its colonial past.
In many ways, Mafikeng is a typical colonial town, with some lovely buildings, a white population tucked away in the suburbs, and a transport and shopping hub used by blacks from the environs.
Its main attraction is the Mafikeng Museum. Easy to spot - thanks to the steam locomotive parked on its porch - it has some fascinating exhibits. The St John's Anglican Church, designed by Sir Herbert Baker, is another highlight for its superb architecture.
The siege of Mafikeng during the Anglo-Boer War was well documented by Sol Plaatje[/b], an author who lived in Mafikeng and has a very informative display in the museum. Victoria Hospital and the Mafikeng cemetery both bear witness to the siege - the hospital took a beating from artillery and the cemetery holds many of the casualties.
