The Magoebaskloof area is a gorgeous revelation for any traveller. The road passes under the slopes of Wolkberg (cloud mountain) and the lovely cascades of the upper Letaba. It skirts the serene waters of the Ebenezer Dam and the forest-covered gorges of the Magoesbaskloof, which hides the spectacular Debegeni Waterfall.
The tour is a pleasurable assault on the senses, as the valleys are veritable gardens of fruit and flowers, while the escarpment edge is cool and serene. The story of the ravine is one of resolute resistance and gruesome reprisal.
Chief Makgoba and his tribe resisted enforced relocation and the imposition of tax by the Transvaal Government in the late 1800s. They were tracked down in the forest by a commando of 800 burghers and fearsome Swazi warriors, and the chief's head was presented to the Transvaalers as proof of his death.
