Makalali Private Game Lodge is an ethnic bush retreat lying on 22 000 hectares of conservancy situated near the mighty Drakensberg mountain range, west of the legendary Kruger National Park and just 5 hours from the buzzing city of Johannesburg.

The lodge is made up of 4 exclusive camps on the banks of the Makhutswi River and each camp offers a uniquely designed swimming pool, enclosed dining and lounge area and an open-air boma. They are all located within easy access of one another.

At this family-friendly lodge children are welcome and a child care service is available during meals and game drives on request. Children aged between 6 and 12 can take part in the "mini rangers" programme hosted by qualified rangers, where they'll learn a new appreciation of the bush and take a home a certificate as a reminder of their safari experience.

Activities at Makalali Private Game Lodge are extensive and range from pampering yourself with a massage from our in-house therapist to morning and evening game drives, birding and walking safaris plus night game drives.

Alternatively, laze by the swimming pool, enjoy tribal dancing and drumming, a day trip to the Kruger Park, cave visits, trout fishing, abseiling, river rafting, hot-air balloon rides, a visit to a cheetah breeding facility or a Panorama day trip.

Makalali Private Game Lodge provides an array of dining experiences from a dinner in the bush or the "boma dinner" under the stars, to meals in the indoor-outdoor dining area where you can enjoy a plated dinner or a more casual family style dining with other guests.

The lodge also offers a private sala dinner for a romantic evening.

Makalali Private Game Lodge consists of 4 camps each with 6 luxury suites which come complete with en suite bathroom, outdoor shower, king-size beds with mosquito nets, air-conditioning, fireplace and a raised private timber viewing deck (sala).

Rooms are decorated in African styles with sculptured metalwork lamp shades, taps and ceramic basins.
