Margate had its beginning in 1919 when Hugh Ballance bought a farm near the mouth of the Nkhongweni ('place of begging'). Legend has it that the local tribe were so mean that stranded travellers quite literally had to go down on their knees and beg for hospitality.

Margate made headlines in 1922 when a large, hairy creature was washed up on the beach. Unfortunately the creature was in such a state of decomposition that a positive identification was never made.

Today Margate is a very popular seaside resort where many city dwellers from Johannesburg escape for long weekends.
