Insofar as any Johannesburg suburb can be called relaxed, Melville is relaxed. The Johannesburg equivalent of Cape Town's bohemian suburb of Observatory, Melville is like a village of calm in the northern suburbs of a commercial metropolis (though it does carry a diluted hum of the intense Johannesburg frenzy).

Melville is characterised by its street coffee shops and pavement cafés, its second-hand bookshops and quirky restauraints, its art galleries and antique dealerships. It is home to a thumping nightlife as well as a lovely nature reserve. Diversity and relaxation are the orders of the day in Melville.
