Middelburg was originally a church town. Its name was changed from Nazareth to Middelburg in 1872 to mark its position - midway between Pretoria and Lydenburg. This town is not to be confused with the other Middelburg, situated in the Eastern Cape.
Middelburg is now a large farming and industrial centre with plenty of activities for the visitor. The Cycad hiking trails offer excellent day and overnight hikes, and the nearby dam offers fine sailing and fishing. There is a nature reserve, several places of historical interest, museums, and an Ndebele village. The town also has cinemas, libraries, decent restaurants and some pleasant shops.
