Formerly the Eastern Trasvaal, the province of Mpumalanga lies in the northeast of South Africa. It is bordered by the Limpopo Province to the north and KwaZulu Natal to the south.
Mpumalanga is a Zulu word meaning "the place where the sun rises". The region is divided by the Drakensberg escarpment into the Highveld and the Lowveld. The Highveld is mainly high-altitude grassland, while the Lowveld is mainly subtropical bushveld of the kind occurring in the Kruger National Park (which extends into Mpumalanga).
