Specialising in the conservation of plants from the eastern region of South Africa, Natal's National Botanical Gardens were established in 1874.
One of the more impressive features of the Garden is the avenue of gentlemanly London plane trees, the members of which have been congregating politely since 1908. In fact, the Garden's Victorian heritage becomes evident when viewing its Northern Hemisphere plant specimens. These include: swamp cypress, tulip trees, camphor trees, plane trees, giant figs and magnolias.
A further historical section is the 'Useful Plants' Garden. This area exhibits plants used by the Zulu people for medicine, crafts and food.
As with all of South Africa's botanical gardens there are a number of exciting walking trails available through various environments including indigenous forest and grassland. There is also the option of a guided walk; this does however need to be booked in advance.
The gardens are also rich in birdlife with over 150 bird species recorded; a specific section of the gardens has even been allocated the task of attracting them.
The Garden is open all year from 08:00-18:00 with slight seasonal time changes. Entrance fees all range below 10 rand.
