The North West Province was created in 1994 after the abolishment of Apartheid in South Africa. The region includes parts of the former Transvaal (now called Gauteng) and Cape provinces (now broken up into three smaller administrative territories). Most of the former tribal reserves, that were established in the Bophuthatswana homeland by the apartheid South African government have been merged into the North West Province.
Madikwe and Pilanesberg are malaria-free reserves that are spread across the plains of South Africa's North-West Province. The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is the third largest in South Africa and its vast, open plains have often been compared to the parks and reserves of East Africa, while Madikwe Game Reserve offers a Big 5 South Africa Safari holiday for the whole family.
