Ostrich Farm - Mooiplaas is a working farm with real ostriches in Oudtshoorn.
Oudtshoorn - great restaurants and bars are just 10km from the farm.
Country Cooking - enjoy delicious farmstyle breakfasts and dinners in a cosy setting.
Just 10km outside of Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of South Africa, is the family farm of Mooiplaas, meaning 'beautiful farm'.
This working ostrich farm, which also farms maize and alfalfa, is owned and run by your hosts Viljee and Hanlie Keller, the fourth generation on Mooiplaas.
The guesthouse is converted from an old farmhouse and still has the traditional facade and typical covered veranda.
Be sure to go on the tour of the farm, where you can get up close to the thousands of ostriches and if you're lucky watch the enormous eggs hatch or hold a fluffy chick. Explore the town of Oudtshoorn or take a trip out to see the nearby Cango Caves.
Otherwise you could relax in the shade of the veranda while looking out over the Klein Karoo towards the distant mountains - in between dips in the swimming pool.
Breakfast is a hearty farm style affair served in the sunny breakfast room or out on the covered veranda overlooking the pool.
Dinner is a delicious four course meal by candle light, ostrich inspired of course or an ostrich braai.
Your hosts will happily recommend and book a restaurant for you in town.
There are 17 large and comfortable, air-conditioned rooms. Each is en-suite, with a lounge area, separate entrance and even covered parking for your car. Each room is equipped with a television, tea and coffee, as well as a bar fridge.
Two of the rooms sleep four people and would suit families or a group of friends traveling together. Family rooms can be taken on a self-catering basis.
In addition, a neighbouring farmhouse was completely converted and refurbished into 4 modern, spacious and luxury rooms with king-size beds and stylish en-suite bathrooms, perfect for families or groups.
The house has a private swimming pool, comfy lounge, wood fireplace, an elegant dining room and self-catering facilities in a spacious farmhouse kitchen.
Beyond the pool lies farmlands, an uninterrupted panoramic view of the purple Swartberg Mountains and your only neighbours - a couple of ostriches.
Walk over to the main guest house, just across the road, where you are welcome to join for breakfast.
