The Panorama Route in northern Mpumalanga is not so much a route as an area, and it's one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa. Its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes have made it one of the most popular regions in the country for self-driving travellers.
The Panorama Route traverses the rugged and dramatic northern Drakensberg mountains. Here the inland plateau falls away suddenly and steeply, exposing awesome views of the lowveld plains kilometres below. The dry season is the best time to see these views; at other times they are often be obscured by rain or clouds.
The most spectacular part of the Panorama Route is the 33km Blyde River Canyon, starting at Bourke's Luck Potholes (impressive rock formations resulting from erosive river action) and ending at the Three Rondavels (peculiar round and flat-topped mountain peaks). There are marvellous views at stopping points all along the route, which can be reached by taking the R532 from Graskop.
