Parys lies on the wide and attractive Vaal river, with tree covered islands, some of which have been developed into resorts. Much maligned by ignorant South Africans, Parys was so named by the town's German surveyor, who was reminded of the French capital city on the river Seine. He even gave French names to two farms in the area.
Parys is now a popular holiday destination, offering a selection of hotels and campsites shaded by willow trees, where people can enjoy the swimming, fishing, bird-watching and boating. The main crops found here are tobacco, maize, groundnuts, sunflower seeds and corn. The region also has extensive cattle and sheep farms.
