This copper mining town is only 3km from Kruger National Park and some of the widest open mines in the world.
The name Phalaborwa means 'better than the south', and the residents celebrate a festival in late August each year in honour of this northern patriotism.
The weather here is almost a perfect constant summer or winter, with an average temperature of around 30 degrees. With the lure of Kruger Park and the fabulous scenery of the Panorama Route so close by, you are more likely to pass through rather than stay in Phalaborwa.
