The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is situated in the crater of an extinct volcano in the Northwest Province of South Africa.
This incredible reserve is sadly overshadowed by its neighbour, Sun City - a gambling and entertainment super-resort that brings in herds of locals and travelers.
In truth, the Pilanesberg should stand alone as a major tourist destination, but the bright, neon, vegas-type glow emanating from Sun City ensnares most visitors before they manage to escape to this remarkable wilderness sanctuary.
Declared in 1979, the reserve is the third largest in the country, and requires at least a full day's visit to do it justice. Many people stay at Sun City and pop into the Pilanesberg for a quick half-day; ideally, you should combine a night or two in the Pilanesberg with Sun City.
Prolific wildlife, varied habitats, and striking and sprawling landscapes typify the PIlanesberg; these attributes have led to visitors often remarking on how the reserve resembles the East African wilderness.
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve now contains most of the mammals found in Southern Africa and over 300 species of birds. The main attraction of the park, apart from the game, is the man-made lake called Mankwe, meaning "place of the leopard".
