Polokwane originated on the farm Sterkloop ('strong creek') in 1884, and the magistracy of the Northern Transvaal moved here in 1886 when Polokwane became a town. In 2003, the Northern Province was renamed Limpopo Province, and Pietersburg, which was declared a city in 1992, was renamed Polokwane.
Wide streets, green parks, colourful jacaranda and coral trees and sparkling fountains characterise Polokwane[/b], which is the principal town and capital of the Limpopo Province.
In addition to its status as a major commercial and agricultural centre, Polokwane is the cultural hub of the region, featuring impressive art exhibitions and elegant historical buildings.
The countryside in the vicinity of Polokwane is the setting for some of the most prosperous cattle ranches in South Africa. Strategically placed on the Great North Road, and halfway between Pretoria and the Zimbabwean border, this attractive city is an ideal base from which to explore the region.
