Since its establishment in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned its reputation as the 'most luxurious train in the world'. For many visitors to South Africa, there is no finer way to watch this country's varied and spectacular unfold than from the comfort of a train.

The train carries a maximum of 72 passengers who are attended by efficient Rovos staff members and the cuisine is of a superb standard befitting an exclusive tour. The beautifully restored wood panelled coaches, traditional furnishings and period décor transport you back to a time when privileged travellers experienced the magic and mystery of Africa in a relaxed and elegant fashion. In maintaining the spirit of rail travel in days gone by, and to encourage the art of conversation, there are no radios, television sets, or internet access on board the train.

Rovos Rail covers the sub-continent of Africa with a variety of journeys. Join the the 2-day trip between Pretoria and Cape Town, the 7-day Namibian journey across beautiful desert landscapes, the 2-day meander between Pretoria and the Victoria Falls or the 14-day Dar Es Salaam sojourn.

Rovos Rail operates 2 classic 20-coach trains which which may be hauled by steam, diesel or electric locomotives at various stages of their journey from Pretoria across South Africa, to Victoria Falls and Dar Es Salam.

Breakfast, lunch and a formal dinner are served in the charming Victorian atmosphere of the Rovos dining car complete with fine china and crisp linen. Meals are carefully prepared with an accent on fresh local ingredients and traditional dishes, and are complemented by a selection of excellent South African wines.

There is a rear observation car with enlarged windows and open-air balconies, as well as a cocktail lounge and comfortable sofa lounge onboard the train.

Each of the tastefully appointed air-conditioned suites onboard the Rovos Rail offers the option of twin or spacious double beds. All suites have a lounge area equipped with a writing surface and, for valuables, a personal safe. There is also a bar fridge filled with beverages of your choice and room service is available 24 hours a day. The private en suite bathrooms have a hot shower, hairdryer, shaver point, bath robes and a complimentary vanity pack.

The Royal Suites each have a private lounge area and full bathroom with Victorian bath and separate shower.
