Prieska lies in the foothills of the Doringberge (thorn mountains), on the southern bank of the Orange River. Like many other towns in South Africa, Prieska had its origins as a fording place, but unlike other towns it kept its local Bushman title instead of acquiring a colonial one - the roaming Khoi knew it as Prieskab meaning 'place of the lost goat'.
Many travellers used this spot as a fording place and it became a well-known staging post. A trading post and mission were established. When several voortrekkers moved their cattle here after heavy rains, they remained.
Today Prieska is a centre for sheep farming, while lucerne, vegetables, maize and fruit are grown under irrigation from the Orange River.
