Randburg sits on the northwestern edge of Johannesburg, consisting of 32 suburbs that were amalgamated on 1 July 1959. Randburg's name is derived from the South African currency, the rand, which replaced the pound sterling in 1959.

Of interest in this area is the municipal art collection and a privately-owned vintage car museum on the banks of the Klein Jukskei River.
