The town of Roodepoort originated when Jan Bantjies secured the prospecting rights on the Roodepoort farm. Gold was discovered the following year and the farm was declared open for public diggings.
Other discoveries followed and, as the diggers needed a place to pitch their tents, the Roodepoort farm opened up its land. Later more tent towns appeared on other local farms and eventually these disparate settlements amalgamated into Roodepoort Maraisburg. When city status was granted to the town in 1977, Maraisburg was dropped from the name.
