Built high up on the Nyoni Rocks on which the Zulu commanders stood to direct the Battle of Isandlwana, Isandlwana Lodge overlooks the enigmatic Isandlwana Mountain and historic battle site below, where the British Army faced one of its worst defeats on the morning of the 22 January 1879.

This lodge is not recommended for children, and would suit persons interested in history and those looking for a tranquil sedate upmarket getaway.

Built of thatch and stone with huge wooden columns supporting floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the lodge is decorated with a combination of traditional and modern styles.

Meet Rob Gerrard, resident historian at Isandlwana Lodge, who will intrigue you with his talks on the Anglo Zulu War battles of Isandlwana and Rourke's Drift, and the Anglo Boer Battles at Talana and Elandslaagte. Tours to Anglo Zulu and Anglo Boer sites, as well as to Blood River, can be arranged.

You could also unwind in the pool built among the rocks after a day on the battlefields, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the library where you can hone up on your history.
