Johannesburg's fast paced, high risk, big money lifestyle is exemplified by this rich Johannesburg suburb. The massive Sandton City Mall (the largest non-metropolitan shopping centre in the southern hemisphere) is always packed with affluent South Africans clad in designer labels and sporting large expensive sunglasses.
Many business meetings in Sandton are conducted in the mall's outdoor square. Busy restaurants and cafés line the square while a giant statue of South Africa's favourite son - Nelson Mandela, looks over proceedings.
Night-life in Sandton is excellent, but unlike the streets of Cape Town, where travellers can stumble in and out of various hit spots, Sandton is a flat sprawling suburb and you need to know where you're going before you set off.
If you're staying in Johannesburg for a night or two before setting off to some more interesting part of Southern Africa be sure to stay in Sandton, Illovo or the Rosebank area. You're guaranteed to do some serious shopping and eating, but that's about it. Along with hundreds of smart formal shops you can find the work of local artists and craftswomen selling handicrafts of good quality.
Walking around aimlessly at night is not advisable anywhere in Johannesburg. Stick to popular and busy areas.
