Somerset East hosts a biltong festival in June every year, an event that may be taken to epitomise the town's character: Afrikaans, and proudly cultural, but not lacking a sense of humour.
Somerset East's two main attractions are the Somerset East Museum and the nearby Walter Batiss Art Gallery, home of the artworks of one of South Africa's best-known modern artists.
In the early 1800s Somerset East's agricultural community supplied food to the frontier garrisons fighting the local Xhosa. Today the town supplies flowers, both wild and cultivated, to any who care to view them, as a fantastic backdrop of towering cliffs from the Bosberg Mountains.
