In the southern most point of the St Lucia Wetlands Park, located at the mouth of the magnificent St Lucia Estuary, is the town of St Lucia. Once a rough hangout for burly rum drinking anglers, the town is in the process of a much needed rebirth. St Lucia's born-again form is intended to be that of a well-organized eco-destination.
There's not much to do in the town proper, despite eating at one of the many seafood restaurants, or visiting one of several bait and tackle shops. St Lucia is, however, a very good base for a number of activities. These include lake cruises, whale-watching, hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, and wildlife tours.
The highlight of this area is undoubtedly Cape Vidal, located inside the St Lucia Wetland Park. Cape Videl is a popular fishing spot. There is also an offshore reef that shelters the coast from thrashing waves, making it perfect for swimming. Exploring rock pools, snorkelling coral reefs, or spotting humpback whales are just some of the wonderful wildlife orientated activities available at Cape Videl.
Be warned midsummer in St Lucia is characterised by an influx of angling fanatics and the town can become pretty chaotic.
