Stanford

Stanford is a riverside hamlet at the foot of the Kleinriviersberg Mountains, only 15 minutes inland from Hermanus.

Despite its proximity to tourist-heavy Hermanus, Stanford has become a refuge for artists looking for a quiet place to live, removed from the trappings of modern city life. The village was established in 1857 and its streets, lined with simple Victorian architecture, convey a timeless ambiance that travel brochures often try to copy - unsuccessfully.

Follow the arts and crafts route that takes visitors to over a dozen artist's studios or bring your binoculars and visit the bird sanctuary on the Klein River, home to more than 200 species.

Another attraction is the small local brewery, The Birkenhead Brewery, where you can sample and enjoy some unique beers at their bar or on the lawns under the gaze of the Kleinriviersberg Mountains.

Stanford also boasts a lovely dairy and cheese factory that offers riverside picnics, as well as a number of wine estates in the area.
