Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is the proud capital of the Cape Winelands. Founded in 1685, it is South Africa's second oldest town after Cape Town and the reason most visitors come to Stellenbosch is to sample the wonderful wines of the area. There are over 200 estates that offer wine tastings in and around Stellenbosch - most of the estates are impressive: grand manor houses, jaw-dropping views and beautifully sculptured grounds.

Be sure to allow yourself enough time to explore this area. The most pleasurable way to do this is to select three or four estates in a day, have lunch at one, do a cellar tour at another, visit the manor house of another and just drink at the rest. A quick word of warning - at the end of the day everything and anything tastes good!

Don't forget the town itself. Stellenbosch has a wonderful mixture of architectural styles from a bygone era - beautiful Cape Dutch thatched cottages, Gregorian style double-storey houses and ornate Victorian homes can be found along the town's oak-lined streets.
