Swellendam grew along the old Cape Wagon Road, a trail blazed by early hunters, traders and explorers, to become the third established European settlement in South Africa. It soon became known as 'the last outpost of civilisation' and its merchants and artisans became prosperous from passing trade.
In 1795 the little town of Swellendam had a moment of fame when the citizens dismissed the Dutch East India Company magistrate and declared an independent republic. The British occupation of the Cape soon provided a new regime and the little republic expired quietly after just three months.
Today Swellendam is a pretty place with wide streets in which you'll see fine Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture. The Dutch Reformed Church is especially notable for its 'eclectic' appearance - its mixture of architectural styles makes it impossible to describe.
Swellendam, like the surrounding towns - Montagu, McGregor, Bonnievale, Robertson, Barrydale, Riviersonderend, Ladysmith and Calitzdorp - has retained the friendly feel of a rural town and supports many guesthouses.
The Breede ('broad') River is perfect for canoeing and watersports while the foothills of the magnificent Langeberg ('long') Mountains attract hikers and horse-riders.
