The mountains in the Thaba Nchu area were the stronghold of the Barolong tribe who migrated here in the 1830s and accepted the Voortrekkers as allies against the British. A missionary station was established in 1833 and the place proved to be the rallying point for the Great Trek travelling parties.

Thaba Nchu was on the main route north from the Eastern Cape colony and became a safe meeting place as Chief Moroka and the Reverend Archbell felt favourably disposed towards the Voortrekker cause. Famous trek leaders Hendrik Potgeiter, Piet Uys and Gerrit Marais all camped in this area at one time.

Thaba Nchu town was established in 1873 and granted independence in 1979, then reincorporated into South Africa in 1994 at the dawn of democracy. Thaba Nchu is not far from the border of the Kingdom of Lesotho and is perhaps best known for the Aran hand knitted woollen garments produced locally by craftswoman. The town has a renowned Hotel and Casino complex in the Maria Moroko National Park just outside Thaba Nchu.
