Thabazimbi owes its existence to the exceptionally rich iron-ore discovered by J.H. Williams at Vliegpoort in 1919. Government bought the ore body, and production for the newly established ISCOR plant started in 1931.
The township of Thabazimbi had its origins in the need for accommodation for the ISCOR employees. It was started on a farm and officially proclaimed in 1953.
The mine has one of the biggest shafts in Africa and produces more than two million tons of iron ore a year. This makes it one of the biggest industries in the country.
