Cape Town's jazz sound is derived from the mixing of international sounds brought to the city's port over the years.

An eclectic mix of African, European and American sounds with a unique Cape Town flavour, jazz has flourished in the townships of Cape Town since the dark days of apartheid and struggle and continues to do so today.

However, like most jazz scenes the best venues can be closely guarded secrets and and only the people in the know get the most authentic experience. This Cape Town Jazz Safari introduces you to those people in the know and allows you to experience Cape Town's rhythms.

- Itinerary
  Your evening of jazz starts at the Distrix Cafe, on the outskirts of District Six where the original greats like Basil Coetzee and Abdullah Ibrahim gave a musical voice to a nation's heartache and hope. This was before apartheid's group areas act scattered this vibrant community to different areas.
  
  Under the expert guidance of a local jazz aficionado, you will enjoy privileged access to Abdullah Ibrahim's music school, "M7". A beautiful collection of black and white photos and an introductory talk will give you a feel for the city's distinguished jazz history.
  
  Next you move on to the first Coloured township of Cape Town, Bridgetown, to the home of the city's composer laureate Mac McKenzie. After an informal jam session, some fascinating stories and a bite to eat at Mac's home you move on to the last stop of the evening.
  
  On Monday evenings you get to attend a jam session, which typically involves a melange of cool jazz, bebop and Cape Town originals, at a local jazz club. On any other day you move on to the home of another talented musician for a nightcap, or visit the owner of a magnificent vinyl collection in Gugulethu before being returned to the V&A Waterfront.
