In the morning you are collected from Cape Town's V&A Waterfront and driven through to Kayamandi, on the outskirts of historical Stellenbosch, in the Cape Winelands.

Your local guide will then take you on a 1 to 1,5 hour walking tour of the Kayamandi township. This tour gives you a richer, more representative picture of South Africa. The Kindergarten and library, as well as various private homes and spaza shops (informal stores) show a side of everyday life in the townships.

Back at the Kayamandi Community Centre you can visit the various craft projects, and have a look at the jewellery and other accessories which are skilfully made from beads, waste products and wire. We recommend you bring some money to buy a few of these beautiful and worthwhile souvenirs.

For lunch you share a table with your hosts and tuck into a traditional meal at Roots African Restaurant. Then it's time to bring out the drums. With the help and humour of Vuyo, a local drumming instructor, you're sure to pick up a bit of African rhythm and start drumming away in no time.
