On 29 September 1969 the earth shook in Tulbagh to such a degree that 9 people were killed and a great deal of damage was done. The town lies directly on a fault in the subterranean rock, and the ferocity of that earthquake has lived on in people's memories.
The one good thing that resulted from the quake was the largest reconstruction and restoration project ever undertaken in South Africa at the time.
The beautiful buildings and rural streets of this picturesque little town now form the most complete example of vernacular Cape Dutch architecture in the country. Tulbagh is a delightful place to stay or to visit.
