The Waterberg region of the Highveld is one of South Africa's premier wildlife areas lying in the north Limpopo Province of which approximately 6 000 square kilometres of the Waterberg have been set aside as nature conservation areas.

A wide variety of accommodation is available in the Waterberg, ranging from affordable tented camps through to luxurious game lodges and exclusive use bush villas.

The Waterberg also contains, among others, the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve and the Mabula Game Reserve. Lapalala is one of the last truly wild places in South Africa, originally created as a sanctuary for rare and endangered animals, including both black and white rhinos.

Not only is the Waterberg a malaria-free area where you can get to see the Big 5, a variety of other animals as well as plenty of prolific birds, but it's also an easy 3 and a half hours' drive from Johannesburg, making it ideal as a self-drive destination as well as a terrific family holiday location. The area is also steeped in history and some artefacts discovered in the Waterberg date back to Stone Age times.

Several eco-tourism projects have been set up to conserve the precious Waterberg ecosystems. One of these is the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, set up by the Waterberg Nature Conservancy - an amalgamation of several conservation areas to protect more than 150 000 hectares of the Waterberg habitat.

The mountains of the Waterberg extend along about 5 000 square kilometres of superb views and picturesque valleys. With no major roads and one town within a 15 000 km squared area, the region makes for a fantastic off-the-beaten track location and is one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the country.

It is less populated than the big game country that lies to the east of the Escarpment and offers a more varied terrain than most of the Kruger National Park, with majestic mountainscapes and rocky ravines, lush riverines and grassed valleys. This makes it a very appealing choice for a perfect getaway where you can soak up the beauty of the bushveld savannah and its wildlife in relative privacy and seclusion.

With so much to offer, the Waterberg region is an attractive and affordable alternative to the legendary Kruger Park.
