A network of trails covering about 40km traverses the Welbedacht farm on the edge of the Gauteng escarpment, south-west of Lydenburg.
Scenery ranges from the lush Crocodile River valley to grassy mountain slopes and an impressive escarpment, while some of the most unspoilt indigenous forests are also encountered. The difference in height between the base camp and the highest point of the trail is over 600m, but hikers will enjoy expansive vistas of the Steenkampsberg mountain, the lowveld bushland, a mosaic of farmlands in the valley below, and also several waterfalls.
160 bird species have been recorded and bird-watching hides have been erected along the Crocodile River.
