8km off the Whale Coast is Dyer Island and the rocky outcrop of Geyser Rock, both proclaimed nature reserves.
Dyer Island is a bird sanctuary and home to more than 10 000 indigenous seabirds, including thousands of African Penguins. These comical creatures with their earnest expressions have been under threat for many years, due mostly to the removal of guano from their habitats.
African Penguins usually burrow into the guano to protect themselves and their young from the elements and natural predators. Conservationists are now providing artificial "burrows" for the penguins and you too can now sponsor a "penguin home" and protect at least one more penguin family from extinction.
Nearby Geyser Rock is home to a Cape Fur Seal colony of more than 50 000 (pretty smelly) seals. The two small islands are separated by "Shark Alley", so called because of the many Great White Sharks who frequent it. A Great White Shark's favourite snack is Cape Fur Seal.
Although you can't land on either protected island, boat trips to Dyer Island will give you the opportunity to see the seals, penguins and other seabirds in their natural habitat. Dolphins, Great White Sharks and whales in season are also often spotted on these trips.
