There are many nature reserves along the Whale Coast and in the Overberg, too many to mention, although they would all be worth visiting for their beautiful fynbos (the cape wildflowers unique to this part of the world) and endless vistas of the surrounding countryside.

We would especially recommend De Hoop Nature Reserve, the large reserve north of Arniston, for its hiking trails and birding; the tiny De Mond Nature Reserve, between Cape Agulhas and Arniston, for picnicking beside the river or under the milkwood trees; and Walker Bay Nature Reserve for its extensive stretches of sandy beach and the historical caves.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve has a splendid display of fynbos and ancient milkwood forests.

So fill your picnic basket, grab some walking shoes and find your favourite nature reserve in the Overberg.
