Thought all of South Africa's coastline was covered in mansions and hotels or that the water was too cold to even paddle in? Think again - this sunny stretch of coastline offers some of the best angling, hiking, diving and scenic beauty in South Africa. The views here are magnificent, the swimming safe, the water warm and there are huge tracts of bush and deserted beaches. There are good wildlife areas here too: try the malaria-free Big Five destination of Shamwari or the recently revamped and upgraded Addo Elephant National Park.
For many people the wild coast is the last frontier in South Africa: the area got its name from the fact that it's pretty, well, wild here. The area is not extensively developed - no massive resorts and miles of honking traffic - and the atmosphere is laid-back, cool and funky. Rub shoulders with grizzled farmers, hip surfers and Xhosa tribesmen and take time out.
In many respects it's the perfect foil to the more sedate (and developed) Garden Route. It's also an area to explore while on your way north to the sub-tropical beaches of KwaZulu Natal or Mozambique.
