Worcester is the 'capital' of the Breede River Valley, a fertile inland area referred to locally as 'over the mountains'. It's a great day trip for those on a Cape Town holiday - it's only a couple of hours away from the Mother City and opens up a completely different side to the Cape.
As though lost in time, Worcester's cultural village, Kleinplasie ('little farm') is a working agricultural museum with weavers, candle makers and all sorts of traditional activities going on. Perhaps more importantly, the region also produces a fifth of South Africa's wine.
A piece of trivia: there is a large blind school in Worcester, so the traffic lights emit a variety of unusual sounds to help residents cross the road safely.
