Wuppertal lies deep in the wilderness area of the Cederberg mountains. This little Rhenish Mission Station was founded in 1830 under the control of the Moravian Church.
Time seems almost to have forgotten this picture-postcard, thatched and whitewashed village, where the missionaries taught their flock millinery, shoemaking, tanning, joinery and thatching.
Wuppertal is renowned for its hand-made 'velskoene' - soft leather shoes and boots in 25 different styles which can be purchased in the little factory shop.
The tannin- and caffeine-free herbal Rooibos ('red bush') tea is grown around Wuppertal, as well as tobacco and fruits such as figs, pomegranates and quinces.
