Almost entirely surrounded by South Africa (except for a small eastern border with Mozambique), Swaziland relies heavily on its bigger neighbour.
The country receives about nine-tenths of its imports from South Africa, and sends nearly two-thirds of its exports there. Major exports are sugar, wood pulp, and citrus fruits, and more than 80% of Swaziland's population is involved in subsistence farming.
Long gone are the days of gold, and the only active mining taking place today is in coal and quarry stone. Unemployment is high in Swaziland.
