Like many developing countries, religion in Swaziland is an amalgamation of first world belief systems and traditional ones.
Christianity is the dominant religion, practised by almost 60% of the community. The second major faith is the Zionist movement, which is a formal amalgamation of Christianity and indigenous ancestral worship. Roughly 40% of the population follows this.
As with many traditional African beliefs, one's dead ancestors are considered to still play a fundamental part in the realm of the living, no matter what religion you follow. The belief in Mkhulumnchanti ("he who was there before everything else") for example, is a traditional one which many Swazi people will ascribe to, and see no conflict with faiths such as Christianity.
Islam, Anglican, Mormon, Jewish and small fringe faiths make up the remaining three percent of religions practised here.
