Swaziland is renowned for its natural beauty and diverse landscapes allowing for excellent hiking and white-water rafting which is done on the Usutu River. Hikers can experience the country on a number of trails through panoramic scenery to waterfalls and viewpoints.
Although not a renowned big game destination, Swaziland is home to the Big Five and other larger animals. The game parks are open to the general public or can be experienced with a expert safari guide.
Make sure you spend time at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and Hlane Royal National Park, where you can track elephant and rhino on foot.
Birding in Swaziland is excellent due to the varied habitats, and around 500 species have been recorded.
One of the major festivals still celebrated is the Reed Dance or 'Umhlanga', which is performed every August at Ludzidzini - the home of the Royal Swaziland household.
The Reed Dance gives King Mswati III the chance to add to his ever-growing number of wives. As the maidens dance before the queen he will choose his next wife, an honour the girl cannot refuse although it is by free choice that the maidens attend the dance.
The girls dance as a pledge to remain chaste until marriage. The festivities last a few days and the final day is spent adressing a number pertinent issues - HIV/Aids being prevalent.
The Reed Dance is a proud Swaziland tradition, and although it has come under some international scrutiny, it is a testament to how unswervingly the people serve their king, the last remaining absolute monarch in Africa.
