The Mlawula Nature Reserve is set in the rugged but beautiful country of eastern Swaziland in the Lubombo mountain range. It's the largest single protected area in the Lubombo mountains.
As you might expect of a mountain reserve, it offers many hiking trails of various lengths up and around its territory. Guides are available, but the density of the vegetation unfortunately hampers game viewing.
The plateau atop the Lebombo mountain range is fascinating to naturalists, containing unique species of ironwood trees and cycads. The trails on the plateau lead past caves, pools and waterfalls.
Two rivers flow through stunning valleys in which Stone Age tools have been discovered; the Mlawula steam and the Mbuluzi river. Zebra, wildebeest and antelope gather at the water's edge, but so too do crocodiles.
Mlawula's Sara Bush Camp is a lovely self-catering accommodation option.
