As its name suggests, Big Bend lies on a big bend in the Usuthu River, where it meets the Lubombo mountains. The town's situation is picturesque, with views from surrounding hills across the river and a wild and beautiful gorge through the mountains.
The big bend in the Usuthu made the site ideal for irrigation of a large area of low lying bush, which eventually made this a centre for sugar production in the region. The town is only worth visiting for its hotel, though - the New Bend Inn, a colonial accommodation with a marvellous view of the valley that hosts wild parties on the weekends.
