Overshadowed for years by its smaller and more famous neighbour Kenya, Tanzania has positioned itself firmly on the safari map and boasts astonishing wildlife destinations ranging from household names to untouched (and unheard of) gems.

Broadly speaking, a safari in Tanzania can be divided into two regions:

The 'Northern Safari Circuit' is based around the densely packed herds and grateful predators of the world famous Serengeti. Throw in the thriving diversity of the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara and you've got a safari destination par excellence.

Southern and Western Tanzania is much more off the beaten track and boasts as its flagship the vast and trackless Selous Game Reserve where the term 'wilderness' can be used with impunity while even more off-the-map Tanzania safaris can be experienced at wild Ruaha and Katavi national parks.

Safari in Tanzania - our recommendations

Classic Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar: It's what it says it is: 6 nights at Tanzania's classic 'must-see' wildlife destinations followed by 4 nights on spicy Zanzibar.

Northern Sojourn: An 8-day safari to top reserves in the 'Northern Safari Circuit', with a range of accommodation including lodges, tented camps and even a treehouse.

Asilia Premier Tanzania Safari: Spend 10 days discovering the wonders of northern Tanzania on thisluxury safari - exclusive accommodation and superb service.

Kifaru Safari: A great 6-day mid-range safari taking in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara.

Under the Stars in Southern Tanzania: Something different - explore the vast Selous, followed by the tiny yet beautiful Mikumi Park and remote Ruaha National Park.

But a safari in Tanzania isn't just about herds sweeping across the savannah: explore dripping rainforests, echoing to the calls of foraging parties of chimpanzees, at the Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream national parks - and we also recommend adding on an Indian Ocean beach holiday as the perfect way to finish off a hot and dusty safari in Tanzania.

Blue water, pristine forest, rugged mountains: Mahale is a little piece of paradise- Africa safari expert Diederik van den Hoeke
