Essentially a fly-in safari because of the long distances and bad roads, the southern and western safari areas are, as a result, pristine and untouched, making for a truly wild African safari. Southern Tanzania is considered Africa's new frontier.
Selous Game Reserve is considered by many to be the future flagship of southern Tanzanian safari travel. Fly into Selous and prepare to be blown away.
I've been on safari all over Africa but the river activities at Selous were among the very best wildlife experiences ever - Africa safari expert Maureen Stover
Katavi National Park (also known as Katavi Plains) is wild, untouched and isolated. With unbelievable game viewing Katavi is the perfect place in which to sink back into nature, enjoying her at her most timeless and rawest.
Don't say you've seen all that Africa has to offer until you've been to Katavi National Park - Africa safari expert Diederik van den Hoeke
Ruaha National Park boasts wildlife populations as grand as they are diverse.
Exploited by poachers in the 1980s, Ruaha is quickly re-establishing itself as one of Africa's best wilderness areas anywhere (many believe Ruaha and Selous to offer the best game viewing in Africa).
Land in Kigoma and take a boat across Lake Tanganyika to the national parks of Gombe and Mahale.
Gombe Stream National Park is renowned for chimpanzees. Gombe is a low key reserve with a small amount of visitors despite its international high profile as a chimpanzee research area.
Mahale Mountains National Park is set against the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, in a place of exotic and isolated beauty.
Here, the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika lap against the sandy deserted shores of Mahale. Forested peaks rise up in the distance and the area is home to the largest number of primate species of any Tanzanian park (including some 1 000 chimpanzees).
Track chimpanzees and various primates through these deep forests; the experience is quickly becoming a world favourite wildlife activity.
