Tanzania's main attraction is of course the Serengeti National Park, scene of the amazing Wildebeest Migration and Big 5 safaris, but remember that timing your trip to catch the migration is tricky - try our When to Go to Tanzania guide.

There is however a lot more to the country than big game.

A Tanzania safari is for those who love activities in the great outdoors, whether it's hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, trekking through ancient rainforests or scuba-diving off a coral reef.

For those who prefer their fancies feathered, don't forget that Tanzania has some of the best bird watching in Africa with over 1 100 species recorded in its varied habitats - including some 2 dozen endemics.

We recommend:

Climbing Kilimanjaro - The Machame Route is a 7-night guided climb of Africa's iconic peak which takes a less-travelled path to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro: fewer people, more views.

No mountaineering experience is necessary but you do need to be fit and prepared.

And for something completely different, go chimp trekking in the Mahale Mountains National Park - Greystoke Mahale Lodge offers excellent lakeside accommodation on the beach with a wild, tangled forest as the backdrop.
