To quote Bradt's travel guide: "Tanzania is a birdwatcher's dream, and it is impossible to do justice to its rich avifauna in the confines of a short introduction." This author faces the same problem here.

For starters, Tanzania's bird checklist sits at well over 1100 species. Even novices can expect to see between 50 and 100 different species in a single day, regardless of where in rural Tanzania you are.

The best birding sites are Arusha National Park and Lake Manyara National Park for waterbirds and forest dwellers, and Serengeti and Tarangire for raptors and woodland and grassland species. For river-dwellers, Selous is an excellent option.

Tanzania's approximately 30 endemic bird species are mostly confined to the Eastern Arc mountains, making that the most important bird habitat in the country, but at least five endemics can be seen in the northern conservation parks.
