Tanzania is mountainous in the north-east with the Usambara Mountain Range and Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. It is also this northern area, near the Kenya border, that forms the "northern safari circuit” with the popular reserves like Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park.

The north and west of the country are where you will find the great lakes of Tanzania, Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

The interior of Tanzania is a large plateau, characterised by plains and arable land. The eastern shoreline provides many beautiful beaches, with the islands of Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia Island just offshore - read our Tanzania Coast feature for more information.

Of course it's this amazing Tanzania environment that draws the visitors: Tanzania is home to more than 80 species of large mammals, from predators to primates, and is where visitors can experience the 'greatest show on earth'. This takes place when over a million wildebeest move across the plains during the annual migration.

And the good news is that since wildlife is the main attraction for visitors on a Tanzania safari, the local authorities do almost everything in their considerable power to conserve Tanzania's incredible natural heritage for human enjoyment.

The country is also a renowned birding destination with over 1 100 species recorded.
