Tanzania » General Information » Overview

Tanzania occupies an area of almost a million square kilometres and its coastline stretches for 1 424km. This East African country is a year-round travel destination and renowned for its safaris.

Tanzania is flanked by the Indian Ocean in the east, and shares its borders with Kenya in the north; Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi in the north-west; as well as the DRC, Zambia, Malawi and finally Mozambique in the south.

The major roads visitors will experience on their Tanzania safari are generally in a good condition but the secondary roads can be hazardous. Rail and bus travel is relatively easy but it is advisable to check suppliers before boarding.

Air travel is easy with airlines flying between the major centres and smaller aircraft linking the reserves and smaller centres.

Tanzania is mountainous in the north-east with the Usambara Mountain Range and Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. It is also this northern area, near the Kenya border, that forms the 'northern safari circuit' with the popular reserves like Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park.

The north and west of the country are where you will find the great lakes of Tanzania, Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika, while the interior of Tanzania is a large plateau, characterised by plains and arable land. The eastern shoreline provides many beautiful beaches, with the islands of Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia Island just off shore.
